Interview with BASS Classic winner , Angler of the Year and FLW Pro Jay Yelas

Questions from members answered by Jay Yelas

Q How do you dissect the good creeks from the not so good creeks?
A All creeks hold some fish. Look for creeks that offer the most cover or habitat for the fish, grass, docks, wood. Look for creeks with some depth, channel swings and shallow flats. Also fish creeks that are stocked by released fish

Q How much difference if any do the Northern Lakes fish than do the Southern lakes

A Thier is a huge differance. Northern lakes do not have creeks or a river flowing into them they are natural lakes and are clearer and less fertile than southern lakes. Thier on no shad in northern lakes they eat perch & crawfish. In northern lakes you look for rocks and grass. Bass up north only grow 12 inches in 5 years. In the south a bass grows 12 inches in one year and the lakes are more furtile which results in more food and stained water.

Q How does he compare fishing FLW with fishing BASS.

A Bass is not the same in 2006 as it was in the 90's. Being a media driven circuit they are concerned with creating a hollywood type entertainment to increase TV ratings. FLW's major push is to sell Genmar products and are concerned about the fishermen. They are conservative and create a familly atmosphere. I like it alot.

Q Jay, obviously you've been on our home lake, What are your favorite areas to fish on Tyler and why?

A I like to fish the new lake (east lake) it has lots of hydrilla and is a good lake. It has alot of habitat for the fish

Q Who was your biggest influence in Pro Fishing

A Thats a tough one I would have to say Bill Sedar. He taught me how to fish. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be where I am today

Q What is your opinion of the "Match Play" format in the FLW Championship? And also...have you any experience with Lake Conroe?

A I preffer accumulated weight format myself but don't mind this format once a year. I enjoyed it. I wouldn't want to do it all year. I didn't do well this year in this format but next year it could be me that wins.

Q Has color sonar had any influence on the way you fish

A I use a X26hd and a X111 it is easier to read in the bright sunlight. Thats the bigest benifit is being able to see you graph @ noon

Q How would you go about establishing a patterns for Rayburn in the dog days of summer June - August?

A That's a tough question. The fish will be in differant places in June than July & August. In June the fish are on the outside edge of grasslines on points and can be caught on a Jig. In July & August the fish roam or cruise the grass flats. You have to work an area hard to get bit. 1oz jigs are good or a red bug Tx rigged worm with a 3/8 to 1oz weight. Topwaters will also work and look for schoolers in areas such as the Black Forest in the afternoons and throw a spook

Q Do you see the professional tournament scene getting better or worse from it's beginnings, and what is you take on the outlook of professional fishing?

A It's getting better because thier are 2 trails and the competition is good for the fishermen. If we only had one trail the payouts wouldn't be as good

This is all Jay had time to answer. I want to thank him for his time and wish him the best in the future and thanks to FLW for arrainging this interview.
